The Meaning and Nature of Playing as a Phenomenon of Culture
Playing is older than culture. Indeed, the concept of culture, even in its most restricted definition, recognizes the existence of human society… Animals are playing exactly like Humans… Human civilization has not provided the general concept of playing with any basic feature. In playing, there plays a central role an independent element giving meaning to action and exceeding the basic needs of life.
Huizinga: "...it was not my object to define the place of play among all other manifestations of culture, but rather to ascertain how far culture itself bears the character of play."
